Design Joburg Collective’s debut in Kramerville this June was proof enough that Media 10’s innovative new approach to satiating the appetites of décor and design devotees was a winning formula. In these challenging times for the event industry, this resilient team reinvented the way that design is experienced with an open, exploratory and low-contact show model that was right up there with previous shows of theirs.

So, it was only natural that they wasted no time in announcing their next ambitious move - Design Joburg Collective: Summer Edition (#DJC21Summer), once again backed by headline sponsors Sanlam Private Wealth. So successful was the last DJC that this new iteration, taking place from the 28th to the 31st of October 2021, has been extended to four days in celebration of a buoyant décor and design landscape.

The Media 10 team have also expanded Design Joburg Collective’s geographical footprint, to include satellite sites at Victoria Yards and 44 Stanley. In addition, FNB Art Joburg Open City will be exhibiting concurrently across 26 complementary art galleries and institutions across Johannesburg. October promises to be a real ‘moment’ for South African design and art.

The Kramerville Design District proved the quintessential arena for the show’s debut and will remain the main pivot for the free-to-attend showcase of the brightest of local and global design players across the disciplines.

Taking place during the Highveld’s best weather month (October), visitors can expect a super-sized urban showcase of design that rivals the best in the world including all of the winning elements from the debut show, plus many new and exciting features too.

The organisers have taken full advantage of Kramerville’s indoor-outdoor layout, carefully planning their exhibits, installations, pop-ups and activations to follow suit. Think: gelato, iced tea and cool coffee bars with special-offer wine tastings to the sound of live music by buskers including some famous local musos yet to be announced. Furthermore, the ever-popular Fourways Farmer’s Market will be present for scrumptious sit-down meals, a wide choice of liquid refreshment and fresh takeaway arts and crafts.

Visitors can expect even more design-centric installations peppered throughout the district’s grounds including the return of DJC’s sought-after pop-ups – this time amped up in a dedicated pavilion with a specially curated experiential focus.

The two sister-districts, 44 Stanley and Victoria Yards, will also be hosting various art exhibitions and activations. Combine this with Art Joburg Open City, and Design Joburg Collective: Summer Edition promises to be a city-wide celebration of culture and creativity!

Over the years, the showcase’s talks programme has continued to be a hit with both trade and consumer visitors and the #DJC21Summer iteration is set to up the ante with many Kramerville showrooms hosting insightful and inspirational talks by industry stalwarts, rising stars and luminaries.

Remember that the show offers a complimentary tuk-tuk service for your convenience (and enjoyment) that will ferry you around Kramerville. In addition, the trade and public are invited to join one of the new walking tours that #DJC21Summer has put together which will make digesting all of the industry highlights and new releases a breeze. Organisers are also working on a shuttle service between the main hub of Kramerville and the satellite locations.

Visitors are encouraged to keep an eye on Design Joburg’s social media platforms and website for the down-low on the latest additions to the showcase’s schedule.

#DJC21Summer is poised to set the bar even higher this season. Celebrating the local and global design industry over 4 days with an innovative, interactive and outdoorsy creative showcase … this is the summer edition that Joburg has called out for!
